Beyond the walls
Facts and figures . . .
We respond to a challenge confirmed by the figures below and believe that well resourced Community Chaplaincy projects help people to take a new path
England & Wales has the highest imprisonment rate in Western Europe
60 - 70% of all prisoners re-offend within two years of release
More than two in three of all prisoners are unemployed when they go to jail
Around two thirds of those who do have a job lose it whilst in prison
The suicide rate for men in prison is five times that of men in the community
On average, 153 prisoners per month, or over 1800 each year are released into the Devon, Cornwall and South West Somerset area.
